YOUR CHATS, IN YOUR HANDS

Save the conversation.
Keep the context.

A customer agreement, a project discussion, a voice note worth keeping. Make a local archive of the conversations available in WhatsApp Web.

Select several chats in one run

Choose multiple contacts and groups from your WhatsApp Web session. Save customer conversations and team discussions without repeating the setup for each chat.

Keep the dates that matter

Set a start and end date for a project, billing period or event. Export a focused conversation archive instead of sorting through unrelated messages later.

Bring the attachments along

Include images, videos, audio, voice notes and documents. Image selection also covers stickers. Choose media categories separately to control what you download.

Choose how you will use it

Read a chat as HTML, review messages in a native Excel workbook, open CSV in a spreadsheet, or keep JSON for a structured data workflow.

Focus on attachments

Turn on Only attachments when your main goal is to collect shared files. Combine it with a date range and media selections for a more focused download.

Keep your own local copy

The backup workflow generates download files in your browser. When media is downloaded, each chat’s export and its attachments are packaged in a ZIP archive.

How to back up WhatsApp chats

Use the Chat Backup feature inside your SMDeck WhatsApp Sender extension. Choose the scope once, then save each selected conversation.

  1. 01

Open WhatsApp Web and the extension

Install the SMDeck WhatsApp Sender extension in Chrome or Edge. Sign in at web.whatsapp.com, let your chats sync, then open the extension and choose More Tools → Chat Backup.

  2. 02

Choose chats and a date range

Select the contacts and groups you want to back up. Pick both a start date and an end date. Use Refresh if your recent chats or groups are missing from the list.

  3. 03

Choose media and a file format

Switch images, videos, audios and documents on or off. Enable Only attachments if you want a file-focused export. Select HTML, Excel, CSV or JSON for this run.

  4. 04

Back up and check your files

Click Backup Now and keep WhatsApp Web open while it works. Allow multiple downloads if your browser asks. Open the downloaded file, or extract the ZIP, and check the messages and attachments you need.

One extension, more than sending. The store listing is named “WARocket Sender:Rocket Sender - WAPI Sender.” Chat Backup lives in its More Tools tab. Backups run in the extension, so you do not need to upload a conversation to this website.

FOUR FORMATS. DIFFERENT NEXT STEPS.

Read it. Review it. Work with it.

Pick one export format for each backup run. The same conversation can become a readable archive, a spreadsheet or structured data.

.html

For reading

WhatsApp chat to HTML

Open a chat-style transcript in your browser, with message order, dates and supported media. A practical choice when you want to revisit a conversation without working through spreadsheet rows.

.xlsx

For reviewing

WhatsApp chat to Excel

Download a native Excel workbook with columns for message time, sender details, message type, body and attachment path. Use spreadsheet filters to review customer or project conversations.

.csv

For spreadsheets

WhatsApp chat to CSV

Keep a portable table of message records for Excel, Google Sheets or a compatible reporting workflow. Media stays in separate files, with attachment paths in the exported rows.

.json

For structured data

WhatsApp chat to JSON

Save structured message records with fields such as messageTime, messageType, messageBody, attachmentPath and messageId. Useful for your own scripts and archive processing.

Need a PDF? Export HTML, open it in your browser and choose Print → Save as PDF. Check the print preview; direct PDF export is not a built-in format.

THE FILES ARE PART OF THE STORY

WhatsApp chat backup
with the media you need.

Keep the proposal beside the discussion. Include the photos from the event or the voice notes from a client. Media switches let you choose what belongs in each export.

  • Images & stickersKeep available visual attachments.
  • VideosInclude clips shared in the selected period.
  • Audio & voice notesSave available audio files and voice messages.
  • DocumentsKeep shared PDFs, spreadsheets and other files.

Availability matters: a file must still be retrievable through WhatsApp Web. Missing media or unsupported message content can appear as a placeholder.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT KIND OF BACKUP

WhatsApp chat backup
or a conversation export?

A WhatsApp chat backup can mean two different things: a phone backup for restoring chats, or an exported copy you can read and keep. SMDeck helps with the second. Your official phone backup remains useful when you change or reinstall WhatsApp.

Phone backup and local export serve different purposes.

FOR THE CONVERSATIONS WORTH KEEPING

A useful record for what comes next.

Build a focused archive for work or keep a personal copy of an important conversation.

01

Customer conversations

Keep a copy of product questions, quotes and order discussions. Use a date range to save the conversation around a particular order or support request.

02

Project handovers

Archive relevant client and group discussions alongside shared documents so the next person can review the decisions and context.

03

Community & event records

Save planning discussions and shared files from the groups you participate in. Choose a specific event period to keep the archive manageable.

04

Personal memories

Keep readable copies of meaningful conversations, photos and voice notes that are still available through your WhatsApp Web session.

YOUR COPY. YOUR CONTROL.

Local exports.
Clear expectations.

Read the extension privacy policy

Generated in your browser

The chat export workflow creates files locally and downloads them to your computer. It does not send your exported archive to an SMDeck server. WhatsApp Web still connects to WhatsApp to load messages and retrieve media.

A copy of available history

The export depends on the history and files accessible in your linked WhatsApp Web session. It cannot recover deleted messages, bypass unavailable media or guarantee every historical message is present.

Keep downloaded files private

Exported HTML, spreadsheets, JSON and ZIP files are ordinary files, without added password protection. Store them somewhere appropriate and review them before sharing. SMDeck is an independent tool, unaffiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.

WHEN SOMETHING NEEDS A CHECK

Get a more useful backup.

Most export issues come down to chat sync, date selection, media availability or browser downloads.

Ask for help

A contact or group is missing

Check that WhatsApp Web is signed in to the right account and has finished syncing. Open the chat there, then use Refresh in Chat Backup to update the selection lists.

The export is empty or older messages are missing

Review the selected chats and both dates. The extension can export only history WhatsApp Web makes available; it cannot retrieve deleted or unsynced messages. Check the relevant period in WhatsApp Web before trying again.

An attachment is missing or shown as a placeholder

Check that its media category is enabled and that the file can still be opened in WhatsApp Web. Unavailable media and unsupported message types may appear as text or compatibility placeholders.

A large backup takes time or downloads are blocked

Keep the tab open and your connection active while media downloads. Try a shorter date range, fewer chats or fewer media categories. If the browser blocks additional files, allow multiple downloads for WhatsApp Web.

A FEW MORE DETAILS

WhatsApp Chat Backup FAQ

Formats, media, privacy and what you can do with your exported files.

How do I back up WhatsApp chats to my computer?

Install the SMDeck WhatsApp Sender extension, sign in to WhatsApp Web, then open More Tools → Chat Backup in the extension. Select contacts or groups, set a date range, choose media and a format, and click Backup Now. Files download to your computer.

Is WhatsApp Chat Backup a separate extension?

No. Chat Backup is included in the SMDeck WhatsApp Sender extension. The Chrome Web Store listing is named WARocket Sender:Rocket Sender - WAPI Sender. After installing it, open More Tools → Chat Backup in the extension.

Can I back up multiple WhatsApp chats and groups?

Yes. Select multiple contacts and groups in the same backup run. The extension processes the selected conversations and creates a separate export for each chat. When a chat has successfully downloaded media, its export and attachments are packaged in a ZIP.

Can I export WhatsApp messages for a specific date range?

Yes. Choose both a start date and an end date before starting the backup. The extension filters the available WhatsApp Web history to that period. A date range is required for this workflow.

Can I back up WhatsApp chats with photos, videos and voice notes?

Yes, when the media is available through WhatsApp Web. Use the Images, Videos, Audios and Documents switches to choose what to include. Images also includes stickers, and Audios includes voice notes. Unavailable media may be represented by a text placeholder.

Can I export WhatsApp chat to Excel or CSV?

Yes. Choose Excel for a native .xlsx workbook or CSV for a portable spreadsheet file. Exported fields include message time, message type, body, sender details when available, attachment path and message ID.

Can I export WhatsApp chats directly to PDF?

The extension exports HTML, Excel, CSV and JSON. Direct PDF export is not included. For a printable copy, export HTML, open it in your browser and use the browser’s Print or Save as PDF option. Review the print preview before saving.

Can I restore these files into WhatsApp or recover deleted messages?

No. These are conversation archives for reading and record keeping. They cannot be imported as a WhatsApp restore backup, recover deleted messages, or transfer your WhatsApp account between phones. Use WhatsApp’s official phone backup and transfer options for those needs.

Does this replace Google Drive or iCloud backup?

No. WhatsApp’s phone backup is designed for restoring chat history. SMDeck exports readable or structured files from WhatsApp Web to your computer. You can keep a local conversation archive alongside your official phone backup.

Is WhatsApp Chat Backup free to use?

The Chat Backup workflow described here is available without a paid upgrade in SMDeck WhatsApp Sender. Select your chats, dates, media and preferred format inside the extension. Available history and media still depend on your WhatsApp Web session.

Do my exported chat files go to an SMDeck server?

The chat export workflow builds its files in your browser and downloads them to your computer; it does not upload the exported archive to an SMDeck server. WhatsApp Web still needs its normal network connection to load chats and retrieve available media. Treat downloaded files as private copies.

Does it work with Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Business?

The export runs in WhatsApp Web on a computer using Chrome or Edge. It can work with personal or WhatsApp Business conversations available in that linked session, whether your phone uses Android or iOS. It does not read a phone’s Google Drive or iCloud backup.
