  • Scenes, section planes, guides, text and dimensions are omitted. Dynamic component behavior is not preserved.
  • Groups become components. Edge visibility, curves, materials, texture placement and attributes may change. Loose edges are omitted.

Download the converted copy and check it in SketchUp. Keep your original model.

A QUICK COMPATIBILITY NOTE

Not every version
needs a conversion.

SketchUp changed its file format in 2021. Knowing which side of that line you’re on can save you a step.

Read SketchUp’s format documentation
2017 — 2020

A format for each version.

Newer models need to be saved in the specific legacy format your SketchUp can read.

2021 — 2026

A shared format, going forward.

Try opening the original first. Keep SketchUp updated and check how newer features appear.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A few things
worth knowing.

Still need a hand?

Talk to SMDeck
Can I convert a new SketchUp file to 2017?

Yes. The open-source converter runs in your browser, reads the model, rebuilds it in SketchUp 2017 format and reads the output again to check it. It does not upload your model. Conversion can omit unsupported data; review the limitations before starting.

Do I need to convert between 2021 and 2026?

Usually, try the original file first. SketchUp 2021 and later use a shared, versionless file format. Update your installation if it cannot open a newer file. Features introduced in newer releases may not be available in older ones.

Will every material, component and scene be preserved?

No. This converter omits scenes, section planes, guides, text, dimensions and loose edges. Groups become components. Dynamic behavior, camera-facing behavior, curve grouping, edge visibility, texture placement, tint and some attributes may change or be lost. Keep your original and inspect the converted model in SketchUp.

Where does my file go?

Your model is read and processed on this device in a browser background thread. The converter does not send the file to a server. It downloads its own program code when needed, then creates a local download of the converted model. Closing the page releases the local result.

What is the file size limit?

Up to 25 MB per file, with an additional limit on expanded archive data. Complex models can use much more memory than their file size; a model below the size limit can still exceed the memory available in your browser. A desktop browser is recommended for larger models.

Does this work on Mac and Windows?

The page works in modern browsers with background-thread support on both platforms. No account, browser plugin, SketchUp installation or server upload is needed to convert a supported file.
